I am doing a reserch paper for school and was looking for some information on when AT&T was bought by Cingular. Specially, how did AT&T go from having to sell their company to Cingular to having enough money to buy back their comapny in five short months. How where they able to generate so much money in a short time period? If anyone has can provide me with links to information on this case it would much apprecaited.

It is all a paper game.
Both AT&T and Cingular are now owned by Windstream.

Look at the AT&T website. I work at at&t and we didn't "have to sell our company," Cingular made an offer and it helped us a great deal. We got much better technology and service because of the merger.. the latest Cingular to at&t change is honestly just a name change. Nothing else in the company is different. Google it or something, I'm sure you'll find a ton of info.. just be careful it's not opinions instead of fact.

None of the answers are truly correct. AT&T got into the wireless game by buying McCaw cellular in the early to mid 1990's. AT&T Wireless was spun off of AT&T. AT&T wireless was sold to Cingular (which was a joint venture of SBC Communications and BellSouth).

SBC purchased AT&T and renamed the combined company AT&T. Then AT&T purchased BellSouth and thus owned all the pieces of Cingular (formerly AT&T Wireless).

They didn't sell the company and buy it back 5 months later.

I hate to do the wiki thing in my sources, but the info is all there!

There is no easy answer to your question. You will have to go to a financial website (Reuters, money.cnn.com, even Wall Street Journal). If you search on the company name or symbol, you can navigate to company news or press releases.

From the surface, the purchase of ATT by Cingular was done sometime in 2003 and only recently did they announce Cingular wireless is now ATT. I believe it was only done as a re-branding - better linkage to the iPhone and Apple. I found a good article on Reuters...here's the link...
