A team that won a National Title that didn't play in a "Major Conference" or was Notre Dame.

Granted, the WAC was a bit stronger back in the day...

I know...that's why I specifically mentioned ND. I'm well aware that they are the exception to the "BCS Conference" rules.

Just a quick comment on the first answer - In 1984, Steve Young was playing in the USFL. The QB for the Cougars that season was junior Robbie Bosco.

As for the question, I don't see it happening until the BCS system is scrapped in favor of a playoff system. The voters simply won't put any non-BCS conference team in a position to play a championship game.

i do not think we will ever see that happen again
unless there is some kind of playoff system
the pollsters know better that the competition is much tougher in the major conferences.
by the way the Florida Gators were the best team in 1984
everyone knows it.

mr. c even then the WAC never compared with the SEC
but you mention notre dame, they could win it again not being in a conference.

and texcoach you better try someone who does not know better, the 1984 gator team was 9-1-1 lost 32-30 to miami in the season opener, tied lsu the next week then reeled off 9 straight wins to finish the season , galen hall took over as coach after game 3 and won 8 in a row ap ranked #3 they were national champions by ny times sagrin and sporting news,
don't try me with they were not ranked in top 15,
get your facts straight Einstein

The Washington Huskies should have won the national title that year. Their only loss was to USC late in the game they also defeated Oklahoma in the orange bowl. BYU beat a 6-6 Michigan team barely in their bowl win that year, and Michigan was by far BYU's toughest opponent that year. If we had even half the guidelines for polling teams as we do now there is no way BYU gets the National Title in 1984.

Well you gotta think that also had a guy by the name of Steve Young during that time too who ran their west coast offense to perfection. If a team has all the pieces together they could go all the way, but they would need to go undefeated in convinving fashion to obtain it since all their games are pretty much conference games. Impossible? No. Very tough? Yes but possible.

Coach Edwards ran a great program. I remember when BYU took down Miami.
