Begin Sarcasm...I love all the serious answers! roll eyes. End sarcasm. I wish I knew a way to keep them out forever, but when I'm planting bulbs in the fall I scatter blood and bone meal fertilizer around the ground and in the planting hole. The squirrels hate that, if you can find blood meal fertilizer they will stay far away from the garden. These fertilizers are found in the garden center with organic fertilizers. Cayenne pepper on the ground freaks them out for a while, but it's gone the minute it rains. They love fresh dug earth and they like to dig for grubs, especially chafer beetle grubs, so using a layer of wood-chips and mulch can sometimes help. The other thing is to not put out bird feeders or bird baths, the squirrels love bird seed more than the bird do. And don't feed them! you'd think that was obvious but the neighbour who complains the most about the squirrels is also the one who feeds them peanuts.

If anyone has anything serious to add, I'd also love to hear it.

Rat Poison under a heavy box with a hole only a squirrel or mouse can get into.
They all disappear within a week, no trace?.
We were invaded due to the woods near us being cut down, including raccoons and skunks

Moth Balls, they stink, but the squirrels don't like them. This was my first season using them, it really did work fairly well. I found the info. in a gardening magazine. Try it! Just purchase a box or two, depending on the size of your garden, and then place them by your plants, they don't hurt the plants at all.

sprinkle pepper-yes, just regular pepper- around the special plants and soil that you don't want the squirrels to dig in. They are especially a nuisance right now burying their nuts! Pepper also works for other rodents.

Spray a hot sauce/chili pepper solution on the plants. Once they taste that pepper sauce on their tongues, they never want to have that sensation again!
Vinager works also!
