I don't know the size of the fans or the AC so I can only guess. I guess the AC uses more electricity than the fans.

Wasting energy is caused by using it when not necessary. An AC unit will use more power than 3 small fans but, fans do not cool, they circulate air. Turning an AC unit off all day while you are at work and then turning it back on when you get home, makes the unit work harder and longer than if you would have set the temp a few degrees higher when leaving. Leaving fans on while you are not there, is a waste of energy.

depending on how big your A/C unit is, it may have a bigger waist than three small fans
