I just moved into a new house that I'm renting... well, the fireplace has old ash and burned wood in it (I have no idea how long its been in there)... I dont want to use my vaccuum, so whats the easiest way to get all that garb out? most of it isnt solid so it can just be picked up.

If I were you, I'd insist that the landlord hire a professional chimney sweeper to clean out the fireplace before using it.

That can become a fire hazard and you could risk a chimney and/or housefire.

You can use a shop vac.. That's what the chimney sweeps use... Just vacuum the ashes and dump out in the trash.. You can use the ashes in the garden as well.... If you want to use the fireplace this fall/winter then I suggest you have it professionally cleaned and only burn starter logs/hard woods so that you don't get creosote build-up.... Good luck

Get a dustpan and a stiff brush place dustpan and brush the ashes into the dustpan then purchase a metal bucket and place ashes into the bucket and keep at least a week to make sure there are no embers then you can throw away in your trash can or if you have roses you can put some on those to add nitrogen it does them good Good Luck

I can suggest you use a hard piece of cardboard,. Just push the cardboard in and lift the ash out. If you use a brush to begin with you are going to have lots of mess to clean with all the ash floating around
