No. They've simply been riding that reputation for many many years past their prime. All teams peak from time to time and all teams have lulls in winning from time to time. Notre Dame was just able to ride their peak a lot longer than most teams. Notre Dame used to be "in style." Then Texas was in style (how many orange ballcaps were sold to people who didn't follow the Horns?). Now, it looks like USC is becoming the bandwagon team. For the western US, anyway.

In football maybe, although you have to give a nod to Oklahoma which won for four straight YEARS back in the 50s and have mostly been in the top tier since. (ND, on the other hand, has been in trouble since Lou Holtz left.)

In hoop, the most storied teams are UCLA, Kentucky and Kansas with a nod to Duke. (It'd be hard to call Duke a "storied" team in the same way you'd say that about the Bruins, Wildcats and Jayhawks.)

Kids younger than college age have no recollection of Notre Dame being any good for any length of time.

I'm not a Notre Dame fan, but it is true. Great following and definitely the number one name in college sports.

They are well known. Their fans are mostly Catholics that never went to college. Football is an industry at Notre Dame, they hype it and promote it and they're real well known.

Just wondering, were they ever really good?

In football yes. However the lead is not by too much and USC is closing the gap. Also Bama is right there at #2 and they have a new coach with a great record.

A few years ago I would have automatically said yes. But like someone else posted, they are just treading water and riding on thei reputation of years past. It's just not like it used to be.

What about Duke basketball? Ohio State football? (only school to have a 2-time Heisman winner!)

Don't think so. Each student thinks their sports team is the best.
