I thought their behavior around the nest was strange, they were just sort of huddled around not appearing to be doing much of anything There were several dozen and since the nest was on my front porch, I had to get rid of it.

Now they (not the same ones, obviously) are huddled in a new spot a few feet away from the old nest, not building a new nest -- but they also don't appear to be leaving. There are about a dozen of them; I never see them flying around although they twitch at each other a lot.

What are they doing? (Besides plotting their revenge against me....)

That is your next wasp nest. Get it before they get you.

Get a spray can of wasp/hornet spray (about two bucks). It knocks them down and kills them from up to 20 feet away. Wait till evening when they are all there and hit them with a stream of the spray.

It takes a while to build a nest & they use bodily fluids if they are paper wasps. Maybe they are all there to put down a good base for the next nest. Or, it has been cool here at night in the NE, they could just be keeping together to keep warmer. They slow down lots when cold!

It is not unusual to have several nests in the same location.

I usually wait the sun sets. Then I spray the nest with Raid. I make sure that the nest is empty, I remove it.

Get a dish with a little bit of sugar water or in fact a bottle with sugar water in it and it will distract the suckers and drown them..
