The uterus can detach, but not without your knowing (as long as your paying attention to your body)
If you're spotting bright red, call your doctor or mdwife (unless you're very close to your due date, but it's still good to call).
Usually there's a lot of cramping, most of the time a lot of bleeding.
My friend recently had this problem, luckly she was near the end of her pregnancy, she had a few weeks of bed rest (after a breif hospital stay and put on mediaction) and ended up having a c-section a little early. But the baby's fine.
This isn't very common, and if you're worried about it, you shouldn't be unless there's reason. Hopfully this helped.
There's a good website whattoexpect.com that can tell you all about it. Or do a search on google for "Placenta Previa"
Good luck, and breast feed! I love every minute of it (even though it was a rough start)

The placenta can detach from the uterine wall during pregnancy. This is called placental abruption. It can occur because of physical trauma, cocaine use, or for unexplained reasons. The baby dies unless it is removed very quickly by a c-section (of course, baby has to be far enough along to survive delivery).
It is assocaited with pain and bleeding in the mother.

Do you mean if the placenta detaches? The uterine wall is part of the uterus so they are one, and can't detach. If the placenta detaches, it's called a placents abruption and if it's a major one it kills the baby within minutes. I had a minor one, due to placenta previa, but everything was fine.

The uterus does not detach but the placenta does. If it does too early its called a Placental abruption but its suppose to happen. It has to detach because thats what makes it possible for it to come out after the baby is born.

The placenta can detatch, called placental abruption, and this may require immediate delivery of the baby for the safety of both mother and child.
