Dear friend,I am the person issued the warning 2 hours before Tsunami struck our Indian coast. On 28th March 2005 I have also issued the denial report of Tsunami when others cautioned us.The last 12 September evening also I issued denial report of Tsunami. It was all possible because I know the situation that will create the Tsunami.I do not claim I can predict. But my close observation helped me to issue these reports. The intensity of earthquake must be more than 7 in Richter scale. One of the tectonic plate should move up or down. The force should be released in the sea.The depth of focus should be fairly low. There are some other causes like volcanic eruption or land slide that also may cause Tsunami. But it is all very rare.

The most common causes of tsunamis are volcanoes, earthquakes and earthslides - mostly undersea.
Volcanoes that have been erupting continuously for a long time have empty magma chambers. The roof then collapses forming a crater somtimes upto one kilometre in diameter. Water gushes into this crater in a very short amount of time, causing a tsunami.

Earthquake originated tsunamis occur when portions of the Earth's crust on either side of a fault jolt past each other. For a tsunami to occur however, there must be some kind of vertical movement along the fault. This vertical movement must be capable of displacing huge amounts of water, thus causing waves.

Tsunamis can also be caused by land sliding in to the sea with such great force that it creates a wave. Similar to the effect of throwing a pebble into a puddle of water.

Earthquakes by far are the main cause. Second would be volcanic eruptions. Meteor impacts also have the potential to cause tsunamis.

This is why they now worried on the last earthquake (cant recall where it was.) there could be the danger of another tsunami.

Its a tremendous quake under the occean. As an impact the structure of the occean bed break up.The bed is formed by many plates--eg Pletonic. This plate break and penetrate into other structure causing a trmendous wave---which ultimately reach the shore with high velocity .
