If I understand your question, you may be referring to the distinction between being alive and being 'clinically dead'. In medicine a clinical death is when the blood systems stop working as well as breathing.

Consciousness, per se has no bearing on the medical aspect. Many are considered medically alive in a vegetative state with no awareness or consciousness of themselves or their surroundings.

It is called 'clinically dead' when a body fails to manifest the basic 'symptoms' of sensory responses to instinct driven perceptions medically accepted as stimulants.
Other wise, medical science is yet to clearly declare what is 'death'. And since is death is not yet comprehensively defined, they are yet to identify that life in its true sense, so the evolvement of growth form in cellular level is called birth, and its modification process called as life.
