well if you are doing this for your school then you would want to go with a T1 or higher. but these are for schools and business only. so if you are trying to make a school network at home or some thing dont bother. the cost of these things are to high.

Because of improvements in cable networking I would have to say contact your local cable company as an ISP. From there connecting several classrooms/dormrooms should be done with ethernet. Depending on your budget you can use fiber optic cable on a FDDI ring for 100MHZ connection speed between buildings or Catagory 5 or 6 wiring for 100+Mhz speed. A lot of this depends on your funding and scope of the project.

What choices do you have in school?
Structured wiring is the most secure and is easiest if, and only if, the school is wired. There should be boxes on the wall like bigger telephone sockets if the school is wired. Getting a building wired is extremely expensive.

Cheapest is wireless, especially if you use modern laptops as they come ready enabled for wireless. Desktops you will need to buy wireless cards for each machine.

For specific suggestions you need to detail your target ie number of and type of machines, how far are they apart, what you already have, servers, internet connection type if any etc etc
