Its about as big as a large grapefruit. Will the wasps just go away, so I can knock out the nest this fall or how should I get rid of this nest? It looks like a giant glob of beige colored stuff with holes all over it. If I open the door, they will attac me I suppose. How do I deal with this?

Wait till the temp is below 40f and hit with shovel, then toss in trash.
or call pest control company now.

Wasp's can be nasty little buggers, and unlike honey bees, can sting you multiple times. There are sprays made specifically for killing wasps and hornets - they spray at least 10 feet away. The best time to do this is in the early morning or in the early evening, since they are usually not as active at these times. Go to the door closest to the nest, open it just enough to get the spray can (and your arm) outside the door, aim the spray and give them a good blast. Wasp sprays have a knock-down chemical in them, which simply prevents them from flying, knocks them down, and kills them. You may need to do this more than once to get the whole nest.....give them the 1st blast in the evening, then the 2nd the following morning. Once you've gotten them all, remove and bag the nest since it could contain wasp pupae (baby wasps).

I would go buy a couple cans of Raid Wasp and Hornet spray. It costs about $6 a can. It allows you to stand far enough away to spray them. It will kill all it contacts instantly. Completely saturate the nest with it and then get away and leave it for a bit. Do not just knock the nest down. Spray it first and then spray it again.
Waiting for cooler weather also helps, since they will slow down. But if you have kids I would not wait since they could be attacked.

go with the spray answer (use the kind that shoots a concentrated stream) but do it after dark as all of the hornets (biting or not) will be in the nest. use as much as you can on the first spray (soak the nest) then the next day you can knock down the nest as long as there are not alot of hornets left flying around the nest. I have also found that spraying the areas in the spring where they have nested in the past helps keep them away that year.

There is a wasp spray that lets you stand away and spray them. Do it in the morning while they are least active. Still be careful though. If you are allergic leave them alone. You can also hire perfessionals to do it.

i believe those are not stinging wasps. in the south we call them dirt dobbers, they build their nests out of dirt.

they do go away in the fall and you can just knock the nest down. when they come back in the spring/summer you should knock it down as they build it so they'll move on. the dangerous wasp nests look like this.

I would do it when it gets colder. If you live somewhere where it does get cold. They leave for the winter.
