Though I respect everyone for what and who they believe in, it has often puzzled me. Is religon just a way of keeping the masses in order by the powers that be who rule over us?

This is a deep question and it all comes down to an individual. No one can MAKE you believe something, you either do or your don't. Therefore, it is up to the individual to make a religion real or not.
Over the past 2000 years or so, some religions have been "created" with some having more power over the "believers" than others. I do believe that some religions have become too political, but fortunately in America we have the decision to believe whatever we choose to believe. Therefore, it would not be logical to assume that ALL religions control their believers, and it is safe to assume that some religions out there are not true. There will always be people searching for that ONE true religion, and that religion will set them free.

While the terms you used are being nit picked by others. (Religon covers a general area of belief in the supernatural caretakers) I believe that religon is quite false. While people will devoutly defend their faith, they fail to realize that the fact of the matter is that people don't realize that they are being manipulated to believe in certain things due to the rules of the religon. However, religon gives people a sense of belonging, purpose, and a group to associate with. So, it can also be said that religon also can keep people who are usually violent at peace.

here a rant about to happen have a lot of views on religion
and before i start I'm not atheist i was brought up roman catholic I'm now agnostic ( don't really believe in god but don't say there isn't a possibility there is god)
i think that organised religion had a good idea be nice to people live a good life but somewhere along the way the mess got f'ucked up i mean all the deaths in the name of religion the way it separates people ( IE northern Ireland the catholics and Protestants)
but my biggest annoyance is the rules i mean don't live a certain way and you go to hell un christened babies go to hell its horrible i cant stick by a religion that says that
plus the huge grip the catholic church had on Ireland till mid nineties it was illegal to use condoms here till 93 or 94 and then there are the Madeline sisters they ended around the same time mainly unwed mothers and sinners according to the catholic church were in there
how can a person who ob-stains from s'ex tell me about s'ex
then they the whole rapping little altar boys

All religion is false because it is an attempt by humans to understand the divine. That's a bit like trying to teach integral calculus to snails. However, it's the best we've got.
Religion has been abused by most groups of people. We have had those in power threatening the peasants with hell fire if they don't behave, but it has also been the spirit of revolution. Now we have so-called atheists trying to sell us consumerism and sex on the basis that morality is old-fashioned.

Religion isn't false, but a lot of those so called worshippers are, as so many people are atheists today I doubt religion is holding the masses back and for some its just an excuse to fight wars.

hmm religion does not keep people in order lol. look at all the wars that have taken place beacuse of it. religion just exists because people didnt understand what was happening many moons ago and didnt have science to explain the sun, moon, winds, solar eclipses etc... so that thought that it was some great god etc... etc.....
those who preach religion should remember their place and keep it to themselves. if people want to believe in a god then so be it, but let them make their own minds up, dont brain wash them into it from the day they are born.
sure i went sunday school, did RE at school etc... but hey i dont give a damn for it, its all seems aload of balls to me.
but im not going to stop some from believing because its their choice. just dont inflict a religious belief on other people and the world will be a happy place
