It's one of those mics that you plug into the middle port under the mousepad in the front of the computer. If I don't use a mic, I can hear the recording, but not too loudly. If I do use a mic, I can't hear the recording at all.

Laptop is HP Pavilion dv/6000

Sounds like you have a built in microphone. By plugging in another, you get a different input source. Check the control panel for the settings for both, and turn up the volume in the recording section.

Right click on the sound icon down in the right corner next to the clock, click on recording when the menu opens right click on the mic go to property then advance then level and move it to 100.

Go to the HP website and look for the latest drivers. There are 48 different models of the DV6000 listed so you'll have to narrow down your model and go from there. Most of the major companies have done a good job of releasing Vista capable drivers but YMMV.
