Nikki so much to get wrong so lets just address one point.

Filthy River

It definitely was, but the river has been getting cleaned up for 25 years now (in fact lots of the pollution was from the effluent from Manchester being shipped down the ship canal, and dumped at the mouth of the Mersey so it wasn't even our fault)

Salmon have been caught at Warrington, and seals regularly bask on the sand banks off Otterspool Prom, hardly what you would expect from a 'filthy' river. There are many anglers who fish the river, and the verities of fish being caught continue to grow.

The river has one of the highest tidal reaches in the world, and this stirs up quite a lot of silt, which makes the water look muddy, but continuing testing is showing that the water quality is amongst the best in the country.

As for the question, just have a wander round I am sure you will find loads, but no one has mentioned my favourite yet, the magnificent St Georges Hall, which is open for tours daily.

Albert Dock has some great shops and Matthew Street has some great bars and the famous Cavern club where it all started for the Beatles, Moorfields has the Yates wine Lodge if you fancy a aussie white and if a match is on try Anfield or goodison park where you will see the best footie teams on the planet!
