Pretty cool as long as its cold and not snowing.

It worked great for Michigan State when they played Michigan in 2001 in front of over 74k people.

Seemed to have worked for Edmonton when they played Montreal in 2003.

Bob - The 74k is correct. Michigan tried doing the same thing at their stadium against MSU and theirs holds 110k+ but that plan never happened.

I think it will be great, hopefully not too cold, like the Edmonton-Montreal game in 2003, and hopefully not too warm. I also think it will get good tv ratings, that is if it is televised nationally, which I would assume so, but you never know with the NHL's tv contracts. Oh wait, I just remembered that NBC is covering it, As long as there are no horse races, it should go good.

Is this happening at night? I guess whenever it is there will still be glaring on the ice....poor goalies.

I'm rooting for Buffalo, so Miller can get a win rather than a tie in an outdoor game, Michigan tied Miller's Michigan State when they played the "Cold War" in front of 74,000 plus. Any other game I would probably go for The Pens, but not this one.

Bob:
I'm pretty sure it was the 74,600, besides I don't even think Spartan Stadium holds 100,000 people. According to wikipedia, its capacity is 75,005, at the time of the "Cold War", it was 72,027. So i'll go with the 74,600.

It is a great idea and good for Buffalo, but the NHL dropped the ball big time as far as the timing of this game. The majority of Americans(including myself) will be watching college football or recovering from the night before. The perfect time would have been the week off between the Conference Championships and the Super Bowl. The sports world is pretty much at a stand still at the point and this game would be much bigger in the whole scope of sports in the US.

Erica, I think I read somewhere that last January 1st in Buffalo it was above 50 degrees so it is not a sure thing. Lake Erie wind current could cool it down.
Also, did you know the Edmonton game was awfully close to being cancelled because it was too cold?

It's great on paper and will be fun to watch but the players will probably feel and play like it is just another gimmick the Bettman NHL is trying to pull. The game will probably come off as a bunch of fluff

And NBC has the game, oh great! another sabotage of broadcasting by Mike Emmrick, do yourself a favor and watch the game on mute

Hoping it gets that lake effect snow. Mwahaha!

For those hoping it's not going to be cold... It's Buffalo, not Florida. It's January, not July! Be realistic here.

The closer you sit, the more obstructed your view will be, and the further away you sit, the less of a view you have... But I'd still go if I could score tickets.

I hope the 133 Toronto Blue Jays season ticket holders freeze their arses off.

Hoi Khosro,
It depends upon the infrastructure that will be available for conducting a successful winter outdoor game. I only wish and pray that there will not be any tragedies and let the event go on smoothly.

just a side note...bob's right...yes we get crazy sucky snow here, but the weather is scizzophrenic in buffalo. it only rained this past new years, and two years ago we had a kegger in the garage and everyone was wearing t-shirts. hell, it snows and we call in the national guard in october...this game is gonna be interesting, if not for the sport, but to see if we need to wear down parkas or bikinis.

you need the weather to be perfect!!!!! If it is to warm it's not gonna happen, and it might be awfully cold, so I don't know if it will happen or not!!! My guess it will be rescheduled for an indoor game. The NHL ice is at perfect temperature players will not try as hard if they hate the ice!!!!, and they will know the difference.

Seems like it's a success already, given that the tickets were snapped right up-by Jays fans?!
