Highly recommended masterpiece by Authur C. Clarke--2001: A Space Odyssey. One better if you can get the film and show the class or make it a joint book and film study project.

Clarke, the inventor of the communications satellite, first began work on this epic story in 1950 and the film was released in 1965 or 69 (not sure which at the moment), but it was clear this film was WAY WAY ahead of our time.

The film's special effects also were the first early ones of their type, later embraced by George Lucas for his epic historic film series, Star Wars.

I've inculded here a link with more interesting facts about both the film, it's director Stanley Kubrick and of Authur C. Clarke:

Not Quite Human

Although a bit dated (1980s), it's about an android built to look like a teenager, who befriends a nerd who is into computers a bit.
