You really should have this conversation with your doctor, they can describe in detail all the options available to you.
Depo provera is an injection of hormones that you get once every three months. Most women will stop having a period, but it's not unusual to have weird patterns of bleeding, spotting and irregular periods if you get them at all. One of the most common side effects is weight gain - anywhere from 5-20lbs per year is not uncommon, no matter how healthy you eat and how much you exercise. Blame it on the hormones. It should also be noted that once you stop taking the shot when you want to conceive, it can take up to 18 months before your periods become regular again, so conceiving can be difficult for many women after going off the shot.
Some countries have BANNED depo injections because of other, more severe side effects, such as nerve injury from the injections, etc. But some people have really good luck with it and can tolerate it well. So it depends on who you ask.
I was on depo for about a year and hated it. It made me sick all the time, triggered migraines, etc. It wasn't worth the hassle. I have learned that my body just does not tolerate hormonal forms of birth control.
Otherwise the birth control pill (comes in many varieties and brands) are very effective when taken properly every day. Less than 1% chance of pregnancy. But again, that's a hormonal form of birth control.
Other options: IUD, condoms, sponges, etc.
Again, talk to your doctor to see what's best for you.

The depo provera is a shot given every three months by the gynecologist. The depo shot usually stops the monthly period which is the primary cause of weight gain. The problem with the shot is that when you're ready to have children, it may be difficult because of the hormones. Some women conceive right after they stop usage but this is not recommended.
The Patch is okay. It gives a dosage of hormones to prevent pregnancy. Recently the patch has been linked to blood clots in the legs and lungs, so I wouldn't recommend that.
The NuvaRing is inserted into the vagina once a month. The muscles in the vaginal wall will keep NuvaRing® in place for three weeks. However the NuvaRing has also been linked to blood clots in the legs and lungs.
The IUD is the worst form of birth control. The Intrauterine Devise comes in the 5 year plastic type and the 10 year copper type. There are some IUD's that have hormones. The problem with the IUD is it can cause PID and even infertility. Usually a doctor will not give a woman an IUD unless she has had two children. If you and your wife want to have kids, don't risk her fertility by using the IUD.
The best thing your wife can use is the Pill. The pill is taken orally once a day and doctors say it's more effective if taken at the same time everyday but that's not entirely true. There are different types of pills out there and her doctor can help her find the one that is right. If she can't use any hormonal birth control, ya'll will be confined to condoms. That's all I can use and they've been 100% effective for me until I forgot to use one.

Depo Provera is a hormone birth control injection, given by a health care professional. It's given 4 times a year and it is very effective. A nice benefit is only 4 periods a year once a woman's system is regulated with it. I have heard both pros and cons. Some women do great with it and prefer it because it's easier than remembering to take the Pill everyday. Some women have noticeable side effects that can be unpleasant. I know some women have to wait months before trying to conceive once they have stopped the injections - or there is difficulty getting pregnant. I wouldn't think this is true in most cases, but it has happened. It could also happen with the Pill, but usually does not. It's widely prescribed and given by Ob/Gyn's - so it's pros must outweigh the cons for most. It would be good to sit down with your healthcare professional and discuss all of your options and which is best for both you and your spouse. I don't believe I would have chosen the shot, had I had the oportunity before my children arrived. My husband had a vasectomy now that our family is complete, so we don't have to deal with birth control methods now. In between pregnancies, we used non-hormone methods because I have issues with every pill I tried (migraines, nausea - I had severe morning sickness with every pregnancy too, I hated remembering to take it everyday, etc...). Most birth control pills are very safe, low-dose and effective. This might be the right choice for you, or maybe you would prefer something else. Your healthcare provider can help you make the best decision. Your age, general health and other factors are always something to consider too. A friend, who is a non-smoker, had a stroke at 22 yrs old from taking a low dose pill. She will never be able to take hormones like this again. I am over 35 and if I needed birth control, something hormone based is not advised by my doctor. You should just talk it over and make the best choice for you.
Hope I could help.

Depo is the shot, it is given every 3months and it is effective. It has all the normal side effects of birth control and on most it stops the period almost completely. If you wife is looking into BC she should consult her GYN. They have so many methods now it is awesome. The patch is great, you change it weekly, the pill comes in various forms, from a period every month, to one every 3-4 months. They also have IUD's which are inserted and stay in place for 5-10 years. These are said to stop the period as well. Depending on how long you want to wait, and if she wants to be period free.... the choice is hers. Good Luck!

The best form of Birth Control is Abstinence. If you don't do it, you won't get pregnant. I suggest you go totally natural in your family planning. It will save the risk of cancers, hormone overload, tumors, etc all caused from birth controls methods. Check the first site below for the information on Depo and the second one for the best way to go for Birth Control which is natural. This method is over 97% accurate and no side effects whatsoever.

Depo is a shot that she will take once every 3 months. That will prevent ovulation and she will not get her period! The only issue with this form is WEIGHT GAIN! I've known ALOT of women who have gained Massive amounts of weight on these and I know 2 people that didnt' gain anything.
I'd stick with the pill she takes it once a day- I did this method for 5 years and didn't get pregnant! Very safe and effective!

Depo is a shot you would get either in the arm or at the top of your butt, once every 12 or 14 weeks.
It works well when used as directed, the only prob i had was weight gain and drop in sex drive. Not bad enough for me to quit though.
Family planning is a personal set of choices that involve not only you and your spouse but also social and religious influences.
Best of luck
