Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease that gradually destroys the lining of the colon, causing bleeding, pain, diarrhea, constipation, weakness, etc. It can kill -- my older brother died from it. It is usually treated first with a sulpha medication and anti-spasmotic drugs. If that stops working, the next step is some form of cortisone, which can have very serious side effects.
The disease tends to be episodic, with periods of severe symptoms for a few weeks, then remission for a few weeks. A lucky few victims only have one episode, and it never comes back.
The only cure for severe ulcerative colitis is to remove the colon and create an ileosomy. The patient then lives a perfectly normal life except at bathroom time -- wastes go into a plastic bag attached to your abdomen.
This is very safe surgery if done before the patient is too weakened by the disease. After a recovery period of a few months, the patient will have a normal life expectancy and can participate in any normal activities except serious weight lifting -- lifting lighter weights is allowed.
Added: by the way, a tendency to autoimmune diseases seems to be genetic. If a close blood relative has or had rheumatoid arthritis, hashimoto's thyroiditis, lupus, pernicious anemia, or a host of other autoimmune diseases, you are at risk for getting one or more of this unpleasant group, which includes ulcerative colitis. None of these conditions should be self-treated.
