In many drama classes, to start the class, the drama teacher uses games to 'open up' the class and student. What is the purpose of these games, and do they teach us qualities for real life and build on the skills (communication, eye contact, expressing yourself)?

For one thing, it helps to break down the walls and not feel so embarrassed to act out. It also helps get use to working with each other.

They are mostly just fun and relaxation to get you to think that acting will be fun, as it should be. Some help actors develop their concentration, obsevation, and cooperation whidh they need to be successful.

They are to warm up your body and sharpen your awareness and interaction with others onstage. They loosen inhibitions as well.
