Often memories are triggered by scents because we use all our senses when there is incoming information. Its difficult to remember specific associations though.
That's a really lovely association you have; and i have a similar one., but it isn't just a smell. My bed is all poky and small, so sometimes i sleep in my moms king size bed next to her. Many times I've fallen asleep warm in my moms fluffy bed with the sound of her tapping away at her keyboard and the scent of a cigarette .Anytime that I'm in bed and i smell a cigarette or hear some light tapping in the background i feel warm and safe and think of my mom. Its a comfort to know that if my mom goes before me, that this association will help me to be to near my mom when she can no longer be physically with me.

Apple scented pipe tabacco. My dad used to smoke a pipe when I was growing up (he quit a few years back) and he liked to use the fruit scented tabacco. Apple was my mom's favorite because it made the house smell quite good. I actually found an apple cinnamon air freshener that smells exactly like it, so I bought it for my home.

Bath & Body Works, jasmine & vanilla lotion: My mom rubbed this on my legs when I was in labor and I always think of that day when I smell it (I hope they never stop making it)
Cigars: My grandpa, who passed away last year
Egg noodles: For some reason, this reminds me of my grandmothers house. She passed away 16 years ago but I still think of her when I smell them. Oh, and the smell of homemade kolaches reminds me of grandma, too.
