You are absolutely correct. In those days, most of the immigrants were homogeneous, that is of one race and were more easily assimilated in the society. Also, they were encouraged, almost cajoled into becoming more like the mainstream society.
Today, the jobs you mentioned still exist, however, most Americans don't want or won't do those jobs. So, yes, Americans do have a double standard for themselves and others.

No most Americans are descended from legal immigrants from Europe. Most of my ancestors were already in America prior to the revolution. It is hard to be an illegal immigrant in a country that did not yet exist.

Yes that is correct. There were many immigrants coming from countries like the UK to begin a new form of life in the USA. And that is also why there are many places in the states which have names which are the same as places in the UK cuz the people who emigrated decided to give those places names that they already knew. eg Exeter in the US has the same name as Exeter in south west England.

I think it's more than losing jobs....you're right the jobs they do don't matter too much.
It's using our tax money for them. They don't pay taxes so we're funding a person who's in the country illegally.
They get services that some of us don't get and we're paying taxes.....we're supporting them.
It's very unfair.....and it makes you feel powerless.
I have nothing against them as a "people".....but illegal should mean something.

Yes, they DESCEND from immigrants, but they all went thru' Ellis Island for verification. NOT illegally. We welcome people from other lands if they want to come here and be productive. We don't want them sneaking in like they got something to hide!

You can't be "illegal" if there are no laws. What is a street wiper?

America was a new experimental society based on freedom. All were welcome in helping build the country into what it is today.
