Check out H.P. Lovecraft. His language is a bit dated, but once you get into his tales I think that you will like them.

I would suggest you read any of the books of Frank Peretti. He wrote House (with Ted Dekker); The Oath; Prophet; Monster; The Veritas Project titles-Hangman's Curse and Nightmare Academy; This Present Darkness; Piercing the Darkness; The Visitation and The Cooper Kids Adventure series (which are the only ones that are more adventure than horror/sci-fi/fantasy/thriller though they are really good and there is some element of the thriller to them).
I also suggest you read any of Edgar Allan Poe's novels/short stories/poems. The Fall of the House of Usher is REALLY creepy.
You might also enjoy Dracula by Bram Stoker; The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux; Frankenstein by Mary Shelley; The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Dean Koontz has already been suggested, but I add my agreement here.
BTW: If none of these do it for you, look through this site: http://www.pburglib.org/horror-suspense.htm - you might find some to your taste.

I suggest anything by Kurt Vonnegut. He wrote about extra-terrestrial beings coming to earth and making objective, and humorous comments about what they saw. He was a terrific writer.
