Would rather avoid a history book or textbook. Could be fiction, but something that would give me an idea of what it was like to live in NYC then.

I'm not quite sure exactly what you have in mind, but I can suggest three children's fiction books which are set in New York during the early to mid 1960s. I have never been to New York City, or even left Australia (where I live), but it seems to me the books give quite a good idea of what New York was like at the time.

I am thinking of the Power Boys series of 6 mystery/adventure stories by Mel Lyle, two of which are set entirely in New York, and a third of which is substantially but not entirely set there. The two books entirely set there are called "The Mystery of the Haunted Skyscraper" (1964) and "The Mystery of the Vanishing Lady" (1967), and the one set partially there is called "The Mystery of the Double Kidnapping" (1966).

If this sounds interesting or relevant, further information about these books can be found at this web page: http://www.foxall.com.au/users/mje/PowrBoys.htm . A chronological list of all titles in the series can be found at: http://www.foxall.com.au/users/mje/Lyle.htm .

The series as a whole seems to convey the atmosphere of America in the 1960s.

I hope this helps.

How about a movie to show you what life was like in NYC in 1961? Breakfast at Tiffany's. Or you could read the book, same title, by Truman Capote.
