1976 rookie of the year and cy young runner up and the starter of the '76 all star game
Mark "the Bird" Fidrych of the Detroit Tigers
19-9 with 24 complete games in '76. he sold out every home start and most road starts. he was baseball's first rock star pitcher. tiger's fans wouldn't even think of leaving the park on a fidrych start until he came out and did a curtain call. fans were so upset that his rookie contract only paid him 20,000 dollars, fans would send cash money to tiger stadium with mark's name on the envelope. he only really pitched that one full season in '76 and hurt his knee and shoulder the following spring training. but he made fans get into basebal. he was a true fan and helped many others find a new appreciation for baseball.

Of all of the answers that I've seen, Greg Maddux is the best on the list. Derek Jeter is a good player but the comment on him getting all of the hottest girls, he's giving them all herpes now so that will soon end. My favorite player in the current era is Ken Griffey Jr. If he didn't get hurt the first couple of seasons that he got traded to the Reds then he would have been the one that everyone was talking about breaking Aaron's all time homerun record. I also like Tulo and Matt Holliday and I am good friends with Todd Helton and know what kind of guy he is both on the field and in his community. He also gives a lot back to his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. All of these guys are class act players and people.

Don Mattingly of the Yankees. He played from the early 80's till 1995. He played on some of the lousiest Yankee teams in history yet year after year he compiled great stats and was an all-star several times. The year he retired he finally made the playoffs but lost in the first round. The next year the Yankees won the World Series.

I loved watching griffey growing up til all the injuries but right now by far my favorite player is ichiro...He is soo talented and he scares me the most when our team faces the mariners. He also has an amazing arm can throw on a line straight to the plate! My favorite pitcher is a closer Mariano Rivera he is the best!!!

My favourite had always been Ryne Sandberg. Very good all round player, awesome D at 2b, was quick, developed some good power as well.
One of the few people that say they had a 40 home run and a 50 SB season in their career.

Bonds and Brady Anderson being the others. (don't think there are any more)

Paul O'neill of the New York Yankees and Cincinnatti Reds. Because he has a gun as an arm. He played with more passion than anyone ever has. He also went almost 2 years without an error.

Mickey Mantle. This is a purely emotional response. His was the first baseball card I ever saw. I was so little and thought he was a genius for inventing switch hitting. I learned better later but by then he was my favorite forever. He was very, very good, but he had contemporaries who were better and he never did play up to his real potential, but I'll always favor the Mick.

Al Kaline. Perrenial All-Star. Played for the Tiger's right out of High School. Never played a day in the minors. Played for one team his entire career. Still a consultant for the Tiger's and can be seen at most home games. Classic Hall of Famer !!!

MIne is not a great player but more of an all out player, Brett Butler. I remember watching him as I was growing up...he gave everything he had at all times. He played a great CF and then set the table great every where that he played.

My real one though is Cal Ripken Jr.; I loved to watch him as a kid, you always expected him to do something special every game. He was a great defensive SS in his time, he could do it all and redefined the position. One of only three things in lofe to count on...Death, Taxes and CAL!!!
