For that question to be asked, many conceptualize a world without religion and think it destitute for moral chaos. The presumption that people without religion cannot be moral is condesending, arrogant and ignorant of those who hold such views. Religion is not a prerequisite for morality or society. It is fallacious to think otherwise.

Subsist on what. Could a beaver subsist having no belief in anything but its immediate sense? Of course yes, As an atheist I could say 'I don't know, maybe there is a God, but not their God'. It's a good topic for conversation or communication, pondering or sharing wonderings, philosophical dialog or discourse and personal musings, etc..

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

There are many societies of atheists that are known to be existing for many decades.

In some countries there are vast majority of people who are staunch followers of atheistic philosophies.
However the repurcussions of such societies are often bad.
The effects and after effects of such societies are quite harmful to individuals within, the society at large and other societies.

One example of what happens due to atheist philosophies is an experiment that was done in Russia a few years ago. This experiment was kept secret and due to the adverse results observed was never made public or publicized.

In this experiment they took small babies, almost infants away from their parents and kept them in special national schools. Though they maintained very high level of education, care, teaching cooperative and social awareness philosophies many children became psychologically abnormal even before they reached their teens. The scientists who had hoped to build a very responsible, socially aware and beneficial human beings and their societies through these experiments then sought to seek the reason behind such adverse observations.

They found that since they lacked the natural love and care of their parents and since their upbringing was done in an abnormal way such adverse effects had happened.

Morale of the story is that even if atheistic societies exist who do not believe in God, Soul, spiritual science and rely solely on science as a basis for explanations of anything and everything the effects of such soceities may be largely adverse and harmful. The societies that believe there is no difference between a human being or an animate and inanimate objects can be considereed largely atheistic. However their effects are questionable.

For starters, God will not be blamed for everything that goes wrong, wars will not be fought in God's name. This society will have to face the uncomfortable fact that they and they alone are responsible for the messes that they have created. They will not ascribe to the 'be good now- and rewards will follow later' doctrines and live life to the fullest. The responsibility to co-create will hopefully be viewed with integrity. This society can subsist, but what will they wonder and philosophize about?

Seeing how I am not an atheist and do believe in God, I don't think the world would even exist without God. After all, in accordance to my religion he created the world. If you did have a society with no religion then there would be no basis for atheism because we wouldn't need atheist after all there would be no religion so someone couldn't call thereself an atheist. Also, I think the people of this society you mention (atheist) would be awful bored. They would just fine something else to quarrel about if not religion. Honestly every culture except for these "atheist' believe in some form of a God, and some of them like those who still reside in tribes aren't even educated but know there is a God.

Yes I believe they can.
Todays America is not based upon the use of the Bible, the Koran or the Tora or any other religious book. And gods have no place in our day to day lives or roles.

Think about this, if mankind believed in a deity then we would lean that direction in a majority. But we don't. In fact most people don't know and don't care what religions think, what gods want or what priests, ministers and or rabis are saying.

So is that really any different from living as atheist?

And yes I know that technically America is more agnostic than atheist but theres a pretty thin line there between I don't know and I don't care.

Most of what is found to be religious fact today is nothing like fact at all.

Some examples:

Easter is the feast of Ishtar ( Nimrod’s son ) who was married to his mother to bolster his claim to the throne of what was to become Babylon. It is also known as Bealtine the feast or fertility. But yet no one questions the observance...

Christmas is the feast of yule, celebration of the winter solstice. Yet we keep it as Christ’s birthday, when in the bible there are no good examples of birthday observance at all, every one ends in tales of death, sex and woe. but yet we don't question its observance...

These are but a few of the acts of blind faith we follow day to day. So how is that decidedly different from no faith at all.

I think we are closer than you can realize to living in an atheist society..

Just my thoughts on the matter.... hope they help in some way.
Good luck.

Of course, it can. Maintaining a belief that society would fall or fail without delusions of gods is an irrational fear.

Most of the reasons that people advocate for gods are wholly irrational. Countries like the US that claim a religious foundation also have the higher rates of criminals incarcerated compared to more liberal and secular nations.

technically there IS a society of atheists: China.

Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, the three dominant religions of China, are all non-theistic, which means they lack a personal deity who possesses an identity.

And what was the last war waged in Buddha's name?

Not at the present time. The trend toward objective reality will take another thousand years.....until then we'll have to put up with a distorted worldview, especially among the uneducated.

I believe not becoz a society in general needs something to bind on . It's general insecurity that people bind on religion , believe in the concept of their religion & follow it. Everybody being an atheist will be a big problem
