For anyone out there who writes and has a love for the craft knows what I am talking about when I say the "feel". It is the connection you have with the characters of you stories. They are real to you not just figments of your imagination but real people that you have created.
I've known that I've had a talent for writing since fourth grade where I always outshined everybody in my class without meaning to. Everyone has constantly told me how good my writing has been since then.
Now, I am a junior in high school, and just three or four months ago, I lost my "feel". I can no longer "feel" the characters of my stories and story-ideas. There is an impenetrable wall blocking me from them, and I want to see them, touch them, know them, feel them again, but my reach is not long enough. I'm sure several of you out there have experienced this in the past. If you could, please give me some advice on how to regain my "feel" and my talent I once had. Thanks so much! God bless you all!

instead of trying to write - take a break and do some reading. read some books that really inspire you where you can tell that the writer has that kind of connection with their characters. it might help to take a step back and learn something from somebody else.

Also, try some different kinds of writing. Do some free writing exercises, try out some poetry, etc etc. Something to keep your mind stretching.

The answer by Rachel is spot on, but if you want more ideas, here are a few.
Instead of writing you can just think about your characters.
Think about things they can do, problems they might have, things they would enjoy or loath.

And start an other story, just to keep your hand in writing. Make an outline, think up a plot, make a list of characters, and so on, just to bend your mind away from the story you got blocked on.

Make it fun, not something you have to do.

I'm wondering if part of your difficulty isn't simply you've aged and the characters you once knew haven't.

Have to agree with others to read a bit, expand what you are used to. Go out on your own to a restaurant or movie and listen to what other people are talking about...don't be afraid, they won't know. All these people are possible characters! How does hearing tales of those younger or older than you make you feel? It's a different experiance than going out with friends you are used to.

Finally, write. Talk to to these characters you know. Ask them what the heck is going on. Write whatever is on your mind, even if its ?$%* over and over...at least you are putting words on paper.

If I'm rather guffawing, I write "hahahahaha!" Otherwise, I write lol while whatever is dull and I desire to snicker on the character for being dull, or while whatever is humorous however I'm now not equipped to snicker out loud (at paintings, for instance).
