In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.-

X was used as a signature for people, who could not write.

However I myself use XOXOXO on all my e-mails and letters to my sons, to mean Love & KIsses. Always have always will.
I put it at the end of my letter every time.

If you take the X apart thus > < it is supposed to signify two sets of puckered lips meeting....therefore kisses.
