The term "economic equality" has always confused me. Is this the desire to see those who work hard and make good decisions throughout their lives reward those that don't by giving them money? That doesn't seem very fair or equitable....

How about those that work their whole life for a company then that company decides it doesn't want to pay the retirement that was promised? How about paying a living wage when the company is making billions in profit but only pays minimum wage ?That doesn't seem very fair or equitable...

The constitution guarantees equal opportunity not equal results. This is a free country not a socialist country. In the Karl Marx model, everyone is equal; equally poor. Everyone is treated equally; the hero and the coward, the achiever and the slacker. The result? Poverty and hopelessness.

In capitalism, there is no reason to decide if people or profits come first. One is dependent on the other. More profits provide more services and goods to people. That is why if you lived in the Soviet Union you stood in line for hours and hours for a pound of coffee and would re-use the grounds more than once to try to make it last.

At the same time in America, you could just walk into a supermarket and find a whole aisle of nothing but coffee of every variety. Sure, there are people in America that cannot afford a pound of coffee. But if you really think about it, in order to find oneself in such a position you have to make a whole lot of really bad decisions. You almost have to try to be that poor in America.

Your Utopian society, where everyone is equal economically and deserve the same income, has failed time and again. Here's why:

Why should I put any effort into my work if I'm going to still be paid the same as the hard workers? Why should I work hard if I won't be paid any more for it? Why should I try to better myself because if I reach a certain level of success, it will be taken from me and redistributed by the state?

No such animal as economic equality. It didn't even appear in the USSR under communism. When you give people something, that other people have worked for, then there is no point in working. When you pay a Doctor the same as you pay a construction worker, then what is the incentive to go to 8 years of college? Sorry but capitalism awards the industrious and handicaps the lazy, which is really a very good thing, why reward poor behavior?

The US Constitution does not provide for economic equality. It does provide freedom for the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.

The implication is that individuals need to be about providing their own happiness.

Equality based on the fact that we are all human and should have the same opportunities and blind justice. The constitution is to protect everyone. What we do with the opportunities this great nation offers is where equality ends and personal responsibility begins. Take responsibility for the choices you make and where it takes you in this life.

In other words, Robin Hood, Take from the rich and give to the poor. Sounds like communism to me.

And who's harping about equality-----only people like you who feel that someone has a little more than you do--------and that's just not fair.

Separating work, innovation, risk-taking, and investment from financial rewards takes much of the incentive out of engaging in those important entrepreneurial activities.

Many socialist societies have stagnant economies.

Plus, we don't favor theft - taking someone else's property.

Usually, the most resourceful people try to leave when socialism is imposed, and the state has to force them to stay in order to prevent total collapse. With the denial of economic liberty comes the denial of all other liberties.

Welcome to Cuba.

I love Spleen's answer. Equality means you have the same RIGHT to financial freedom. It doesn't mean you can do nothing and expect it.
