Many girls and many women tend to get light periods at times, and there will be barely a discharge for a few hours, or even a day. So it's accurate for them to say they've only had it for a half a day, or even a whole day.

It means that it is so light that it kind of stopped for part of the day.

This happens to me sometimes. I'll think I'm done, and not wear a pad/tampon, and a few hours later I have discharge.

Probably they mean it started half way through the day.
