Hi Third P,
No, you couldn't be the same person, could you. You wouldn't remember who you were and you'd have to learn all over again and build a whole new persona. I would imagine the frustration, fear and confusion would alter moods and emotion. The person you used to be would be gone forever unless memory returned.

We are soul with a body, not body with a soul. Is memory seated in the brain only? How do we define memory - merely a record of our experiences here on earth? Or a remembering of a much bigger thought? Your higher self will still be connected to the Universal consciousness and archetypal memories. Your soul essence will still be the same. You will still have the same purpose of life, the same lessons to learn, the same contributions to make, your sacred contracts will still have to be honoured.

If you are talking physically then I think typically a person does not lose all of their memories. I believe the core of the person remains.

Philosphically, a complete memory erase would mean that you wouldn't be the same person. All the experiences that made you that person would be gone and you would have to start over.

All our life is about change, I am never the same man in any given moment, and certainly not the same man to anyone else if I lost my memory.

I think if a man's memory had been lost then he will still be the same man.

This refers to the basic question of spiritual discovery :
Who am I ? Or
Who dwells within a man's body ?

A man's identity is by the soul that dwells within his body and identifies itself with the body due to the faculty called 'ego'.

Even if due to some reason one man's memory gets harmed and gets essentially 'lost' for all practical purposes,
the soul that dwells within his body and that identifies with it due to Ego is the same. It is the same essential 'I' that dwells within his body and identifies with it.

So he is the same man though he can not remember anything.

Since the existence of 'soul' is beyond the existence of memory and remains unaffected by it. So until the person is living it is the same 'I' that the soul identifies with and seems to be dwelling in the body.

Another corrolary of this 'soul' body association and identification principle is as follows :

All our cells in the body get regenerated. Some cells get regenerated and replaced slowly than the others.
After 12 to 13 years you will not find a single cell that is same in the body that was before 12 or 13 years.
But you are still the same person, right ?

This is due to the fact that you are the soul that seems to dwell within the body and that identifies with this body and all its possessions and relations due to Ego.

This belief will cause great suffering. If we believe that we are who we are due to our memories, then harsh and painful memories will be maintained to ensure our 'identity'. Much of the past that could or should be forgotten will be frequently revisited to serve the purpose of maintaining an 'identity'.

I have sympathy for anyone places themselves in such a position.

As I was thinking about your question, a sudden feeling of dread came to me. What if I forget all my loved ones. What if I forget my name, my age, all my achievements and bad deeds. What would be left to me?

If one thinks about it, everyone is a different person from who he is one minute or one second ago. We all continuously change. But we all keep memories as we change; it grows as we grow, and though our personalities may change for better or for worse our memories are still there like a lifelong companion. So if one's memory is gone, who will you become?

So the answer is, one would be a different person. It's as if one died, never to be ressurected.

You can't be the same person. But just like you can remember how to talk your own language you can also have many other characteristics of your past personality.

You are who you are in reference to what people think of you, not what you think of yourself.

If you lost your memory, you don't remember your expirences and people but people around you can.

So you are still the same person.
