Pirates. It's just so much more crusty and rugged. Aarr!
I was once on a replica of the "Batavia", a Dutch merchant sailing ship (and it *can* be sailed, too!) and loved it. Even the toilet facilities (crap in the ocean, and wipe yourself with a barnacle-encrusted, frayed end of a rope that dangles into the seawater, which everyone else uses too.)
