thompson conducted an experiment right?he said that the gas emitted rays which were negatively charged.but how did he know it was negatively charged?

when you pass then between two plates with a high constant voltage betwen them they will be attracted more to the charge of opposite sign and will bend one way or the other.

If he set up a field, and knew which side was poisitive, he would know which charge the rays were by looking at where they went- negative rays move toward the positive end.
