The 230SL does not have the vertical three pointed star. The hood emblem is a flat disk at the center front of the hood, with the three pointed star as a circle about 6 or 8 inches diameter in the grille.
In general, sedans, limousines and some four seater convertibles (cabriolets) have the small vertical star, coupes, sports and commercial models like vans and trucks do not, but have the flat emblem and large grille star. This was true from the 1950s till the 1980s models, after that I'm not sure.

it goes on the hood of the car the old one can be removed
by the underside of the hood, unlike alot of mercedes other models that have the raised mercedes this is a round badge that says mercedes benz and is blue in color on the edges.
the raised mercedes logo will go there also but isnt done as the large mercedes emblem isin the front grill..

It doesn't have on, the star is in the grill. It does a badge that goes on top in front of the hood.
