Did you know that prior to and throughout the 1800's the reverse was true? Girl children were dressed in blue as it was considered a soft and calming color and boy children in pink as it was a softer shade of red which was considered a fierce dominant male color. In World War 2, Hitler began using pink triangles to associate femininity with homosexuals in concentration camps. I am not sure if this gender specific role reversal in Europe was the sole reason for the switch in the United States, but by the 1950's the cultural meanings of the colors were switched in America to what is socially the norm today. Many studies have been done to try and show that children are hard wired to prefer the pink/girl and blue/boy norm. However the results have been conflicted. It appears that societal pressure to conform has played a huge part in preferences among the young. As adults, color preference becomes more diverse among women but still appears to hold true for men with the choice of blue. Maybe I can start a war here of my own by playing devils advocate and suggesting that this may be because women are more adaptable and free thinkers??

Take an eight-year-old girl, (and a couple of her friends) to a WalMart. Tell her you will pay to repaint her bedroom, supply new bedclothes, a rug and other decorative items.

Then give her a shopping cart and leave.

Guess which color she'll decorate her room in??
