Yes. Anything that creates jobs would help...

The problem is the cars we are producing are gas guzzlers and overpriced. Nobody wants to buy. I think our American companies are either plain ole slacking or in bed with the oil companies.

Nope. This would help the American auto industry, while hurting a whole bunch of other American industries. The net result to the society would probably be a loss.

If foreign companies sell less cars in the U.S., they will buy less American equipment and materials to make those cars, delay or cancel upgrades to their (generally) American-made ERP and CRM systems, pay less to American port workers who unload those cars off the ships, etc. Also, their workers would earn less, so they will spend less on things like leisure travel aboard American-made airplanes (so foreign airlines would not buy as many of them) or watching American-made movies in theaters or on DVDs.
