if you can pull that off with out looking trailer trashy your be hot in any thing you were

A short pleated plaid skirt with pumps does not sound like a "prep" to me, it sounds more like a naughty schoolgirl. I imagine a preppy look being trouser type pants & an argyle sweater. When I was in school (a pretty long time ago) the prep girls never wore short plaid skirts, they were too prude to do that.
