If you look at the name, Nitrogen Dioxide:

It has to have nitrogen in it so it must start with N...

Di means 2, Oxide means oxygen, so 2 oxygens, so it must end in O2

so therefore it must be NO2

one nitrogen atom bonded to two Oxygen atoms NO2 (the 2 should be a subscript) the trick is to look at the prefixes of the names of the elements in the compound.
