ronallan is absolutely correct. The original CD-ROM was designed to read 150 KB/s. Then came one which could read 300 KB/s, so it became 2x, ie, twice the speed of the original where 'x' was the speed of the original one and 2 was the times it was multiplied. Now we have 52x which is 52*150 KB/s.

The original CD-ROM specification reads data at 150 KB/s. These are 1x drives. 4x drives are rated at 600 KB/s. 52x drives are rated at 7,800 KB/s (52 x 150 KB/s).

It is the mathematical symbol for multiplication, also known as the times symbol. In this case it means "times". ie the CD ROM is being written to 52 times faster than you can listen to it.
