Well, how about this: we had forgotten the Venizelos family! Apparently we have a come-back from that side too. Is anyone called Trikoupis, he would be a great next candidate for president of any of the big political parties!

Regarding the King, I don't agree. At least with the Papandreos etc. we get to choose and vote. AND they alternate, which makes them sensitive to the people's requirements. We've had democracy since 500 BC, we won't accept a regime that was imposed upon us (As for Byzantium, even then the Emperor was not necessarily inherited; we have so many cases that Emperors fell and others, favoured by the people, teh Senate or the Army took their place. Not exactly democratic, but following the Roman Republic model, at least theoretically).

Chloe, all over the world usually they have 2 choices, 2 major parties. In fact we have more choices, because there is a 20% of other parties. But even without that, the fact that there is another choice usually restricts the government, otherwise they would be "asydotoi". I don't blame them, if I were a monarch I would really take no interest in what the people think, I would do whatever I thought right for them. And this would be good, because I would do what is good for THEM, usually people do what is good for their own pocket...

zusje, I agree. However, the singers and actors don't seem to be as successful as the athletes... It seems that if you can play basketball well enough, you can also rule a Ministry or Municipality.

I am not saying they are related, but that is even wore if you think of it: I mean of all names, it had to be the name of a previous prime minister!!!

Sorry dear but Venizelos isn't related to the famous 20th century's Great Stateman (some aggue that Venizelos was THE Greek Statesman for the whole of the previous century; I agree with them). His real surname was Turkoglu and he changed that during his student days (perhaps he was nurtuing even back then political ambitions about the future!)

I would like to clarify an issue in your question which appears rather misleading to me.

1. Evangelos Venizelos (from Thessaloniki) has nothing to do with Eleftherios Venizelos (from Chania, Crete). Distinct families and genealogies.

2. Kostantinos Mitsotakis is the only politician linked to the Venizelos family (the grandson of Eleftherios Venizelos sister).

Even so, your idea is, in principle, correct. Nepotism is the most consistent attribute of Greek politics the last 100 years or so.

You are forgetting some people:The two Mitsotakis children, both are involved in politics. What about Fofi Gennimata?I think we all know by now how the politicians world work,if you had a father/mother/uncle/brother/sister involved in politics you are automatically in....For Gods sake, even Dimitra Liani-Papandreou tried to get in....
And of course lets not forget all those wonderful actors/singers etc who once they can't get a contract for a movie or a kentro anymore realize that the next big money is in politics and decide to get involved....
But who is to blame, those who try it or we who keep voting for them...they would be stupid not to do it,as they are successful in it and they know they will always be...

Yes I see your point, but what good is it to be able to choose and vote, when really we only have two choices? I think it's horrible. We are totally helpless. Although I definitely wouldn't want the king to come back, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference...
