If not by plane...Any other cheap public transport?

The cheapest is the bus which takes about 12-15 hours (it's 1000km). The train is not too bad if you go at the low period. High period it is more expensive than flying. There are various bus companies making the run every day.

Public transport means trains.

Plenty of bus companies that can take you to Sydney though.

"Cheap"? - that's subjective.

The cheapest is walking.

Bus.. it'll take you about 20 hours to get there though

or you could drive in with a few mates. It'll work out almost as cheap as a bus ride, but more fun.
