Everyone has their different opinions on what the "best game" is.
I'd have to say the GTA series on the Playstation was great, but I'm going to go ahead and give my own personal opinion as one of the greatest games being "M.U.L.E." for the Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64 machines.
My favorite Atari 2600 game might be Pitfall! or Kaboom!, Intellivision was Tron Deadly Discs, NES - Super Mario Brothers 3, SNES - Super Mario World.
I liked RPG's back in the day where I'd play Ultima III and IV all day long. So I can't be an expert on the newer games like Final Fantasy and the like, though they certainly look cool.
Also, some noteworthy computer games to mention would be Diablo & Diablo II, Starcraft, Warcraft II, Duke Nukem, Doom, and Unreal Tournament.

Hardware wise it has to be the PC.
With a modern PC and emulation software, it is possible to play games on nearly every system including the Spectrum, Atari 2600, Colecovision, MS, MD, SNES, NES, PS1, N64. In addition it can also emulate thousands of original arcade games using MAME.
Best game of all time is subjective but for me it has to be one that can be played over and over and be different each time. My vote would go to Civilisation 1 or 2.

here is my take -
on PS2-
god of war 1,2 - the epic feeling of this game gives me gossebumps.
final fantasy 12 - one of the deepest games ever.
metal gear solid 3 - one of the most polished, well constructed games ever.
gta san andreas - there is just so much to do in this game that
many people finish the main storyline with just 40 % of the whole game done.
XBOX -
Halo 1,2 - they are the games that carried the xbox console on their shoulders. many people buy xboxes just to play these games.
fable - the story book tale atmosphere rules...
Nintendo consoles -
the legend of zelda series - just like halo on xbox, it is the trademark series of nintendo devices. it symbolises nintendo.
Metroid prime - i have not played this game but from what i have heard , people seem to freakin' love this series. so i thought i would add it.
PC -
half life 2 - turned the first person shooter genre upside down.
sims - invented a whole new genre of games.
max payne - although it did nothing revolutionary, the dark tone of this game made it a must play.
as i am a playstation 2 owner and played all the other games at my friend's homes , i must say that god of war 2 was the best game for me. the game is just pure genius.

a lot of people put the gamecube down but i think that they're wrong. anyone who says bad thing about the GC obviously hasn't played it. as for the game, ...erm... any from the Final Fantasy series hands down
