You could start writing something such as the date that you bought it, the place, even time. What is so special about the note that you just bought. Write your name and address (in case you misplace it). Write about your day, your work, your feeling. If you decided to make it a journal (or notebook it doesn't matter). You can start writing about anything, if you don't know what to write just write "I don't know what to write.." believe it or not, your pen will move on. I love to use good pens to write, colorful brush pens or markers, crayong, colored pencil, etc. Old stamps, collage it! For example, I kept my journal since I was 7 or 8. I'll write about my days, school, friends, punishment, movie, TV show, rewards, my grades, my income and expenses. Nowadays, I also write down interesting and cheerful quotes from wherever I got. I taped the fortune cookie paper that I like on the page, some dried flowers, a leave from last fall. Dentist appointment, favorite sandwich recipe that just accidentally created, self-reminder about phone calls to make or bills to pay. Favorite movies or books, list of things to do, etc. There is no rule how one should carry their journal, it is the journey of your personal space, your life, cherish it, when you come back and read it one day - you'll smile, cry, or whatever, that is your life, make it, claim it, own it. I wrote about my relationship, dreams, goal, disappointment, drawing, sketches, daily events, donations to charities, new shoes, sporadic. Have fun journaling. Keeping track of history your way.

You start with a piece of pristine drawing paper and a couple sharpened drawing pencils. You mount your paper on your easel or drawing table. You get your coffee set. You fix your music. You get your phone so you'll have it close and it won't interrupt the flow of your inspiration to have to go get it.
Once everything is as it should be, you take your seat and stare.
It's a gift.
