From what I seem to recall, and I am very old, the first person to bow a guitar in rock was Eddie Phillips of the UK mod/psych band the 'Creation'.
The name of the song(s) were 'Painter Man' and 'Making Time', from the album titled 'We Are Paintermen'.
Jimmy Page was a session man before the Yardbirds, and employed by famed producer Shel Talmy. One of Shels bands at the time were the Creation. Jimmy Page was influenced by Eddie Phillips technique.
Led Zeppelin: innovators or plagiarists? Jimmy Page: genius or charlatan? You decide!

FYI, the first person credited to to using a bowed electric bass was Louis Cennamo who played with many great bands in the 60's and 70's including; 'Steamhammer', 'Renaissance', 'Colosseum', and and the mid 70's heavy rock group led by ex Yardbird frontman Keith Relf called 'Armageddon'.
Edit - Bill, you scavenger! You follow everyone around like a vulture looking for some roadkill! Haaaa!

A symphonic orchestra that makes use of a sax for 3 songs does not immediately boost right into a jazz band. i do no longer think of you are able to set a rule that common for varieties of music. some steel bands use all varieties of surprising issues (unusual as in unusual for steel) for a wanted result. fake in my very own opinion as a music artist. i might call a steel band that has an entire S&M style of element occurring for all time symphonic yet i does no longer call a steel band that makes use of a violin for some songs symphonic.

NO.......not true.
Page did not introduce the bow on the guitar.
But d@mn it since I don't recall right this second
who he himself says he'd gotten it from.
Sorry. But I've helped thus far...
EDIT...Note: Page has stated who the culprit
was and pretty much down to the very session
in the studio or stage from which he'd gleaned it.
For the life of me I can't pinpoint it nor remember
the source.
2nd EDIT...Thank you, CR. Thus, I "bow" out.
