since the denominators of the first and second mixed numbers are not the same, we need to convert it to improper fraction to be able to process it.
thus, 3 1/5 - 1 3/8 would be 16/5 - 11/8. How did I get this? take 3 1/5 for example, multiply the whole number 3 by the denominator 5 then add the numerator to get the improper fraction 16/5. Do this with 1 3/8 and you would get 11/8.
since the denominators are not the same, we need to get the least common denominator. In this case, the LCD is 40 (8X5), then get the equivalent fraction. Thus,
16/5 - 11/8 = 128/40 - 55/40
= 73/40
since the answer is an improper fraction, we can change it to mixed number, thus the answer would be 1 33/40.
hope i was able to explain it to you clearly.

3 1/5 - 1 3/8
Note that
3 1/5 is (15+1)/5 or 16/5, and
1 3/8 is (8+3)/8 or 11/8
So,
3 1/5 - 1 3/8 becomes 16/5 - 11/8
We need to have a common denominator, the LCM of 5 and 8 is 40
16*8/(5*8) - 11*5/(8*5)
128/40 - 55/40
(128 - 55)/40
73/40

get the common denomindator which is 40 so:
40/5 = 8 multiply to the whole number (8*3) = 24 plus the numerator = 25
your first fraction will be 25/40
do the same procedure to your other batch of fraction 8/40
25/40 - 8/40 = 17/40
