The dream was disturbing, bizarre.
I was in a run down hotel and in my room.It was night time and very quiet and I was in bed. Not a nice hotel. old fashioned and spooky
Through the lock on the door this very long thin piece of crumpled up paper (thin and string like) had a paper eye on the end.
The string like paper was very long and gradually was threaded through the keyhole until it hovered by my bed in mid air and there was a flower like thing at the end which also looked like an eye.
It was obvious someone was threading it through from the other side of the door and it felt supernatural and it was designed to disturb me.
The next thing I remember is gradually opening the door and there was no-one there.
The hall was dark and run down. At the other side of the dark hall there was a tiny office with two young women who ran the hotel.
I asked them if this had happened before and they said yes, a sinister young gay guy was stalking the hotel and was scary but no-one could catch him.

I am 40 and have just ended a friendship with a 35 year old guy because I fell for him and it wasn't reciprocated.
The friendship ended quite angrily and sadly.

By the way, referencing an answer below: I am gay and so was my friend and the dream happened when a few friends and a family member advised me strongly to forget about him. I felt very, very strongly about him.

Normally being in a hotel would represent relaxation, but since yours was creepy, it probably means that you were in an odd/uncomfortable place (in your life). Then something disturbing occurred to you (the break-up). You opened the door (you moved to another phase in your life) and no one was there (leaving you unattached). You learned that the disturbance was caused by an uncatchable stalker (your friend couldn't be comitted). Not sure about the eye/flower/string part - would have to look those up.

Ok here is what I got from it. First of all the setting was creepy and dark because your friendship ended badly. The reason it was in a hotel because you cared for him romantically and old hotels, old fashioned you think sex. The crumpled up piece of paper was symbolicaly your friend, his mind. The eye was the outside of him, the door into what he feels. The paper was crumbled up because you didnt know what he felt about you. The paper was threaded through the keyhole towards you as if teasing or taunting your feelings and for you to find out. You go to open the door and no one is there. You lost your friend... so no one is there. The feelings you thought he might have for you arnt there. The reason the two women say there is a gay guy stalking the hotel is because the thought of your friend is "stalking" your mind and they cant catch him because you feel your friendship is over.

I believe the meaning of this dream to be that you feel violated or like a trust has been abused. Different symbols mean different things to different people, but seems as if you feel like you let someone in and then they weren't really there for you. I'm guessing in the real world, you let your walls down more than you realized, thus letting someone "see" your inner self which is rare for you and thus feels as if they were forcing their way in a little. This is the eye coming in through the keyhole. The hole was there, but you really didn't expect anything to enter it. The eye is seeing the unguarded you. However, when you went to look back beyond the door, the person isn't really there. I don't think it's a "gay" dream.
