The best qualities of the *best* Japanese people, are the best qualities of anyone anywhere. Kind to strangers, helpful, clean, and a strong sense of community. Oddly enough, my favorite quality is that Japanese people do not make natural bureaucrats -- they are more willing to be flexible, and do things in the Spirit of the Law, rather than following the rules exactly as written.
(-: Of course, this can be maddening when the rule says one thing, some people say another, and the authorities just look away until something brings it to their attention.

I spent a year in Japan, and although the japanese have a reputation for getting drunk a lot. They really know how to have fun without booze.
Besides that they are genuinely friendly and honest people.
