In order to remain synchronized and go for the highest score possible, I guess they would.

I've then got another question ... How does one become a solo synchronized swimmer?

i think they don't all drown and if they are good synchronized swimmers, drowning wouldn't be a problem for them cause they know how to swim. and if they didn't know how to swim why bother trying to synchronize.
