yes you can attach it to another computer as a slave.. but be sure you placed the proper jumper SLAVE configuration of your hard disk.

if you are using XP all you need to do is insert the XP Cd into your cdrom then repair your OS and it will fix the trouble starting up your computer.

If the hard-drive isn't the problem itself, you can connect it to another computer. Be careful if you connect it on the same data cable as another hard-drive, to have one drive (no matter which) work as "master" and the other one - as "slave". Then start the computer and enter the BIOS setup program. Make sure the port you connected the hard-drive on is set to autodetect the drive settings (if this isn't possible, enter the parameters written on the drive's case); also make sure the primary booting device is the drive the computer used to boot on before connecting the other drive. Save the settings and restart the computer.
Now, if the operating system of the computer accepts the file system you used to format the old drive, you should be able to access your old drive and copy the files to a CD, DVD etc.
Don't connect the hard-drive on the same cable with an optical drive (CD or DVD), as it is possible for one or both of them to stop working even if all setting are correct.
