Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales - this came into existence after the Act of Union of 1707. Also called 'the United Kingdom'

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland = came into existence after abolition of the Irish Parliament in 1801.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the current legal entity which came into force after Eire or The Irish Republic gained independence

The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are NOT part of the UKofGB andNI. They are Crown dependencies with their own parliaments, taxation systems etc, but rely on the UKetc for defence and foreign affairs. The Channel Islands are not part of the European Union.
